Family Engagement and Assessment Services

Family Engagement and Assessment Services (FEAS) supports Government and non-Government organisations to better understand child and family strengths and areas for concern, to enable practical long term care planning. As well as being an established not-for-profit clinical service across the Hunter and Mid-Coast regions, The Rosewood Centre's point of difference is the scope of expertise available for assessment input; such as Psychological assessment and diagnosis to formally understand conditions that might impact family functioning. Our approach to the family assessment is then tailored to accommodate these needs. This ensures that parents and carers have the best opportunity to represent their strengths, and provides case workers with a robust and comprehensive assessment report which includes recommendations for forward planning.

Family Engagement and Assessment Services (FEAS) at the Rosewood Centre include:

  • Family Needs (Parenting capacity) Assessment
  • Step-by-Step Foster Care Assessment
  • Kinship Care Assessment
  • Restoration Assessment
  • Family Group Conference

Family Needs (Parenting Capacity) Assessment

Focus areas are developed in collaboration with the referrer during the intake process to tailor the assessment to the family’s particular needs and learning style, and to provide the most relevant information to assist care planning.

Our Family Needs Assessments focus on:

  • Comprehensive overview of parent strengths and areas for development.
  • Parent-child relationships and attachment.
  • Protective factors and risks.
  • Capacity for change and sustainable independent service engagement.
  • Adequate parenting to meet the basic safety and emotional needs of the child(ren).
  • Any additional areas identified by referrer.

How we do this:

  • Home visits including observations of parent/ family – in family home and/or community.
  • Individual interviews with parents/caregiver to explore insight into concerns, early life experiences, relationship patterns, mental health history, impact of trauma, substance use, understanding of parent role, developmental needs of child and other relevant factors.
  • Interview/discussion with other family members/service providers.
  • Review of relevant file information.
  • Psychological assessment if required.
