For the last three years, Ben Robinson has been supporting clients across the Hunter as a Behaviour Support Practitioner at The Rosewood Centre.
He brings a calm and collaborative presence to the team and is passionate about helping people across the lifespan, with a particular interest in older adults and people living with dementia or an acquired brain injury.
After studying Psychology at the University of Newcastle, Ben pursued Behaviour Support to help make a difference.
“I enjoy the collaborative approach to improving an individual’s quality of life,” Ben explained.
“I enjoy working with both the individual, their support teams, and broader support networks.”
Positive Behaviour Support is about understanding the “why” behind behaviours.
“It’s based on the idea that all behaviour has a purpose, or function as a way of communicating a need or feeling,” Ben said.
“Our role is to understand that function, reduce risks, and provide alternate strategies to meet those same needs.”
A recent success story for Ben involved helping a person transition between service providers, which can be challenging for a person with autism.
“The successful implementation of the Behaviour Support Plan saw a significant decrease in challenging physical behaviours, and an increase in quality of life and overall mood of the person.”
Ben encourages anyone interested to reach out to The Rosewood Centre to find out more.
“Behaviour Support is one of the most flexible and broad-reaching services,” he said.
“We are unique in that we work not only with the individual, but parents, supports, carers, Supported Independent Living operations, and other Allied Health specialists.
“There are no downsides to having a chat with us about your needs and what we can offer.”
When asked why he loves working at The Rosewood Centre, Ben did not hesitate in saying “definitely the team”.
“There is great collaboration amongst our team to address complex problems that arise because there is a wealth of knowledge and expertise to draw from,” he said.
